From the CEOThe school year is well on its way and the tutoring season is soon to be upon us. This year is particularly important as the future of the free tutoring program is up in the air. As the Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress begin to take up the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (currently "No Child Left Behind"), no one knows exactly what programs will be cut, or if parents will still be given a choice in who tutors their child. I will be traveling to Washington D.C. at the end of the month to speak to members of Congress about the importance of the free tutoring program and the need for parents to have a choice for their child. The goal of Renaissance is to make it clear to President Obama and Congress just how well children do in the program and how much they seem to enjoy it. Hopefully we will be able to help keep free tutoring alive and well for many years to come.If you have yet to receive your 1099 in the mail, please contact us immediately! UpdatesCleveland Metropolitan School District has determined that it is a conflict of interest for teachers to tutor children from the school at which they teach, beginning September 2009. RES is working on plans to use CMSD teachers wherever possible at other schools within the district for the tutoring program. When it is not possible to use a CMSD teacher, all tutors working with Renaissance Enrichment Services will be required to successfully complete a BCI and FBI background check. After we receive a clean background check, the tutor will be required to complete training in the RES method of teaching, as well as, use our research based curriculum. The following companies administer the BCI/FBI check:

"In The Spotlight"Artemus Ward was born in Waterford, Maine. He began life as a compositor and occasional contributor to the daily and weekly journals. In 1858, he published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer the first of the "Artemus Ward" series, which, in a collected form, achieved great popularity in both America and England. "Artemus Ward" was the favorite author of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Before presenting "The Emancipation Proclamation" to his Cabinet, Lincoln read to them the latest episode in one of Ward's writings. Ward is also said to have inspired Mark Twain when Ward performed in Virginia City, Nevada. To learn more, click on the name, Artemus Ward. | |
